what have we here?
“b” says /b(uh)/ and “s” says /s-s-s-s/
and “a” can say all kinds of sounds
you can blend all these letter sounds to make words you know…
and sometimes words you’ve never heard of
you can pull off the beginning sound of a word and see what’s left
(but why would you want to do that?)
you can find words that are brothers and sisters in the same family,
you can outline the shape of a word
and
you can use words to fill in blanks…
and you can put words together to make a sentence
but
do those words ring with your thoughts from inside your head?
if you know all the sounds and all the words
and even answer all the questions
just right
but if the words don’t make you
think
and remember
and laugh
or even cry…
are these words speaking to you?
what have we here?
My favorite string of words: “but if the words don’t make you think.” Indeed, what would be the point.
I like how you used bold text to make powerful points pop out even more! I just finished teaching a linguistics course to pre-service teachers. This would have been a fun addition to share with the class.
Words are just letters if there is no thinking behind them. You have created a clever poem that makes the reader think. And isn’t that the point?
I really REALLY love this! My friend – the poet!
